Bring your antiques for appraisal at The Auction House, April 7, in Audubon and help abused animals

CAMDEN COUNTY – It’s time to unearth those old “buried treasures” up in the attic — or maybe you’ve stashed some long forgotten heirlooms and family knick-knacks way back in the closet. Even though mid-winter might be sooner than you planned to tackle a major spring cleaning, ask yourself if you’re feeling lucky!

NJ Aid for Animals is offering you the chance to find out if your nuisance clutter that echoes a bygone era — dusty antiques, outdated small furniture, old toys and unusual bric-a-brac — might actually be worth something. Or maybe it’s worth more than you ever dreamed. The animal rescue’s partnership with The Auction House, locally renowned auctioneers in Audubon, NJ, promises an afternoon of fun and appraisals by the pros, Saturday, April 7, from noon to 3 p.m. For just $10 per appraisal, antique lovers can feel doubly good knowing they will get a professional appraisal of their wares while also helping to improve the difficult lives of abused and abandoned animals locally.

“In the spirit of the wildly popular ‘Antiques Roadshow,’ we’re hoping to draw hundreds of the area’s longtime home owners, antique lovers and history buffs and anyone else who loves to hear a good back story about a venerated piece that may have been in the family for years,” says NJAFA President Kathy McGuire. “This part of southern Jersey is so rich in history I can’t wait to see what comes through the door for appraisal.”
Marty Cobb, owner of The Auction House, will serve as appraiser for the day. He brings over 30 years of experience from both the retail and auction sides of antiques and collectibles. His expertise includes antique furniture, fine arts, decorative arts and collectibles, particularly toys and dolls.

Attendees are asked to bring small items such as jewelry, coins, porcelain, toys and dolls, as well as smaller furniture pieces and art work. All of the proceeds – that means 100% of funds collected for each appraisal – will benefit NJ Aid for Animals and the organization’s tireless work on behalf of needy animals. McGuire personally pounds the pavement in underserved and poverty-stricken areas knocking on doors and seeking permission from owners of dogs and cats not yet spayed or neutered. She educates them about the importance of spay/neuter and provides low cost information on how to do it. In Camden, if individuals don’t have transportation, McGuire takes the pets, gets them altered and returns them to the owner.

“This is an especially critical time of year for our spay/neuter program and rescue efforts. In this tough economy, these animals need to be in a safe place with food, shelter and a compassionate caregiver more than ever,” McGuire points out. “Please plan to come out with your antiques for an afternoon of fun and discovery in April. This event will also offer a great way to help you jump start your spring cleaning project!”
