Butters 11 month old female pom

On Wednesday, May 29, NJAFA President, Kathy McGuire, received a phone call while she was grocery shopping in Gloucester Co.  An individual from Willingsboro, NJ  was calling to say his 11 month old female Pom who gave birth to two puppies on May 1 was not feeling well.  He had owned her since a puppy and she had never been to a vet even while pregnant or in last four weeks since giving birth.

He asked if we would pay for her vet care so she could take care of the puppies he was planning to sell.

Beans and Brie 4 week old pom/peke mixes

We informed him that he would have to  be responsible for her vet care and we could suggest a vet who may work with him on payments/GE Care Credit.

When he said he didn’t want to spend any money on her or the pups who he was feeding dry dog food to, we advised him mother dog probably had parvo and she would require immediate vet care as would the puppies.  They would surely die if not given immediate care.

He indicated he did not want to put any money out for these animals and could we recommend a group to take them or the shelter.  We said we would take them.  This individual asked if we couldn’t’ drive to Willingsboro.  We advised we could not and could meet him half way.

Beans

The individual who met us was driving a brand new Nissan Armada and when I commented what a nice vehicle it was, he said he had just purchased it.

The puppies were in a filthy cardboard box wrapped in dirty excrement filled towels.  The mother was in a similar filthy wire dog crate.  We brought a clean carrier to put pups in and a clean carrier for mom.  When I asked about her collar on which I could affix a leash, he said he “took it off”.  With no leash mama dog had to be lifted from crate to our carrier. Owner refused to transfer her and said he didn’t want to touch her.  Owner was advised he needed to immediately transfer the dog into our carrier so he took gloves from his car put them on and transferred her into our crate holding her as far away from himself as he could.

Brie

They have no other animals. The father of the pups a Peke was in the yard but escaped and he has no idea where it is.This individual never asked my name, where the pups would be going, what would happen to them, or said thank you.

Our vet was standing by in the vehicle behind NJAFA vehicle and all three were taken immediately to hospital where the mom is being treated for parvo and feeling pretty miserable.  Another day and she would have died.  The pups are doing ok and will be fine after a few days of supportive care.

Butters, Beans and Brie (named because we had just come from grocery store) will be adopted to loving homes.

They escaped death for sure.

If you know of a backyard breeder please report them.
