April 2010 - Potential adopters and/or
shelters who allow "rescues" to pull from their shelters.
Please read this timely article from American Humane.(CLICK
HERE TO READ ARTICLE) So called
"rescuers" like Bobbi Jo Falcone and Jessica Durkin who make themselves
sound so magnanimous that they "rescue" animals when in fact people like
them are "brokers" they give us all a bad name.
Too, just because a legitimate rescue has a 50lc3 does not make them
responsible. Many 50lc3's who also call themselves responsible rescuers
don't even spay or neuter their animals before adopting them. Moreover,
they charge ridiculous adoption fees.
Please, if you are adopting an animal from a private rescue, be sure it
is spayed or neutered. If you are a shelter allowing individuals to
"pull", please perform due diligence and check the background of these
"rescues" and/or individuals.
CONGRATULATIONS

OSCAR PROJECT AT ABSEGAMI HIGH SCHOOL
NJAFA was asked to collaborate on a project the High
School is doing for "one book, one school". The book
they are all reading is "The Absolutely True Diary of
a Part Time Indian", a novel by Sherman Alexie that
has won every literary award for young adult
literature. Based on a true story of a Native Amerian
Indian living on a reservation, the protagonist's dog
and childhood friend, Oscar. had to be shot because
the family could not afford vet care. In an effort to
raise awareness about humane education, the principal
of AHS invited NJAFA to put together a curriculum for
the Business students. The students are forming a
"mock non profit" that will raise money for needy
animals in the Atlantic Co. area for distemper shots.
Our President, Kathy McGuire, attends the classes
twice a week and facilitates the students through the
process of forming a charity including choosing team
leaders, picking a mission statement and name, coming
up with a logo and fundraisers....click

Poor Rudy and Nigel...a foreclosure caused them to have to live in their car
with all their belongings...then their CAR CAUGHT ON FIRE!!! Nigel called
EVERYWHERE and could get no help. The shelter would NOT allow him to bring

him.NJAFA gave a shout out to Pinups for Pitbulls who blasted the message
all over!!! Central Bark Doggie Day Care in Philly stepped up and offered a
place for Rudy to stay for FREE while he and Nigel get on their feet. Here
is a picture of Rudy who is also getting some FREE obedience lessons (may as
use his time wisely!!) from OPPORTUNITY BARKS!!! A special thanks to AWA who

Our President, Kathy McGuire, attends the classes twice a week
and facilitates the students through the process of forming a
charity including choosing team leaders, picking a mission
statement and name, coming up with a logo and fundraisers.
The name of their organization is "O.S.C.A.R."
(Our Students Contributing to Animal Rescue),
Their mission statement is:
Promote humane education and ensure the future health of
animals, giving every animal a chance".
Their first fundraiser is planned for December when the teachers
at Absegami will pay $5.00 per person to be allowed to wear
jeans to school. The proceeds will go to NJAFA. Every $5.00
raised will purchase a distemper shot for a dog to prevent the
fatal disease Parvo.
The students plan to organize several more fundraisers before
Spring. The enthusiasm they bring to this project is rewarding.
In the Spring, the students have chosen a needy area in Atlantic
Co. where NJAFA will go and distribute free distemper shots with
their partner, Atlantic Co. SPCA.
Unexpectedly, the author Sherman Alexie, was featured on WHYY
recently while promoting his book tour in Philadelphia.
Kathy McGuire was able to get through to the radio station and
had a delightful conversation with the author.

THE DEADLY VIRUS THAT
KILLS AND CAN BE PREVENTED FOR $5.00.
These
little faces are why we do what we do in under served areas like Camden
City....that is offer FREE distemper shots to residents that cannot
afford a visit to the vet.
NJAFA got a call at 7:00 am on a Sunday
morning from a Camden City resident that had FIVE puppies with parvo.
She could not afford an emergency vet visit or even wanted the pups. Thank god we had a vet at our sanctuary
coming that morning and were able to start IV fluids and antibiotics.
We didn't think they would make it through the night. They had parvo and were admitted the next
morning to hospital where they will remain for at least a week.
PLEASE EDUCATE EVERYONE YOU CAN ON THE
IMPORTANCE OF THE FIRST SET OF SHOTS ESPECIALLY FOR PUPPIES. MORE DOGS
ARE DYING OF PARVO THAN OF RABIES. THE DISTEMPER SHOTS ARE THE SINGLE
MOST IMPORTANT THING A PUPPY CAN RECEIVE TO PREVENT PARVO
PROGRAMS
CLOTHING BIN DONATION PROGRAM
Please donate linens, towels, sheets, old clothes,
coats, shoes or any recyclable item to help us raise
much needed funds. We have clothing bins at Halo House
Boarding Kennel in Franklinville, NJ and the Winslow
Township Municipal Offices Parking Lot on Rt 73 in
Winslow Township, Cedarbrook Post Office Parking
Lot on Rt 73 and Mongan's Service Station, 438
Williamstown Road, Winslow, New Jersey.
PET ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
In addition to transporting
owned dogs and cats to get spayed and neutered to help
stem the tide of over-reproduction, NJAFA has also been
providing ancillary supplies and services for dogs and
cats through PEP for the last five years.
PEP enriches the lives of dogs and cats after they get
spayed or neutered. For example, pain medication - the low
cost clinics do offer pain medication but the residents of
Camden have to pay extra for it. Without the funds to pay
for even a spay or neuter most residents do not have extra
funds for pain meds. PEP pays for the pain meds.
PEP provides for much needed shots that will prevent PARVO,
a very contagious sometimes fatal disease that dogs
contract and can cost up to hundreds of dollars to treat.
Money donated to PEP also pays for flea treatment, a dog
house, a bag of food or any extra component that will
enhance the life of an animal after they are spayed or
neutered and before they are returned to the owners.

SHOT CLINIC
FOR CAMDEN ANIMALS
NJAFA is hosting shot clinics for dogs and cats in Camden City.
These clinics provide much needed vaccinations for dogs that without
the shot could acquire Parvo, a contagious and sometimes fatal
disease. We also provide cat distemper shots, food for dogs and
cats, flea treatment and collars and leashes.
Sponsors are needed for our Shot Clinics in Camden. If you or your
company would like to sponsor or co sponsor a shot clinic please
contact us. We will put your name in our press releases and our
website and provide signage at the event to show your company cares
about the animals in Camden. Your funds will pay for shots and flea
treatment for dogs suffering in Camden City. For more information

PROGRAMS
“25 FOR LIFE”
You can help save hundreds of dogs and cats
for JUST $25.00
In 2006 animal shelters in the State of New Jersey had 39,000 dogs.
l0,000 of them were killed. Figures for cats were even more
staggering. 61,000 were in the shelters and 32,000 were killed..
When breeding among animals goes unchecked, there are negative
effects. “Over seven years, a male and female cat can reproduce over
420,000 kittens. in six years, one female dog and her offspring can
give birth to 67,000 puppies.
NJ Aid for Animals is an all volunteer non for profit humane
organization that reaches out to help one city that is part of these
statistics. Camden City, NJ We are the only animal rescue that goes
to private homes and transports dogs or cats to be spayed or
neutered and returns them the same day. We provide funding and
transportation for spaying and neutering Camden dogs and cats.
.
.“25 For Life’ can prevent dogs and cats from producing. This kind
of birth control will reduce the numbers of unwanted dogs and cats
forced to shelters or horrible deaths on the streets. ‘25 For Life’
insures that no unwanted dogs and cats would be born.”
You can help by giving up just one leisurely lunch or dinner;
skipping movies and popcorn; doing your own nails; or making a
birthday or holiday gift in the name of a friend or family member –
just $25 can help save a dog or cat from reproducing. That’s the
price of a simple spay or neuter procedure that most Camden City
residents cannot afford.
Donate $25.00 for the price of a spay/neuter for a Camden City dog
or cat and your donation will keep female animals from suffering
through multiple pregnancies, help male animals be less aggressive
and keep future generations from being born.
Please help NJAFA make a difference in reducing the overpopulation
of cats and dogs in Camden City by donating your tax deductible
donation of $25 today via Pay Pal or by sending checks or money
orders to New Jersey Aid for Animals, P.O. Box 4, Cedarbrook, NJ
08018. Click here to make a donation.
