NJ Aid for Animals had eight pit bull puppies surrendered to them
recently from a family in Camden City, NJ. The mother was "loaned" to go
with the puppies until they are weaned at which time mother will be
spayed and returned to owner.
Puppies eyes just opened.Linda, the mother, is extremely emaciated and
we are loading her up with nutritious high quality food that is very
expensive
The family also has a Chihuahua that NJAFA paid to get altered and shots
and two other unaltered male and female pits which NJAFA will aid in
getting altered. (Female currently in heat)
NJAFA needs help with the puppies to come to our sanctuary and handle
the pups and get them socialized. If you have a few minutes to come to
our sanctuary in Winslow Township Camden Co. to handle and touch the
pups, we could sure use the help. With summer vacation almost here,
perhaps you have a school age child that would like to come and just
"sit" with the pups. Do you have a girl scout troop or a club that you
could use toward community service?
We have built a fence around a large shed that will be their "home"
until the end of July. For now they are in our mud room on a cool tile
floor and Linda is learning to use the doggy door.
Linda and her puppies: Petunia, Lily,
Ivy, Rose,Daisy,Clover and Piglet
require extensive amount of work every day changing the sheets and
handling the pups. Linda is very friendly and is only one year herself
so wants to play and has no one to play with.
We could use petsmart gift cards to purchase the incredible amount of
food the puppies will require and the mother is eating about five cans
of high quality puppy food a DAY along with the supplements we are
giving her.
THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT A VERY REPUTABLE RESCUE THAT WORKED WITH US BEFORE
IN THE COCO CASE IS GOING TO TAKE ALL EIGHT PUPPIES!!!!!!!
On
May 15 the Absegami Community together with the Atlantic County SPCA and New
Jersey Aid for Animals is sponsoring a FREE distemper shot clinic for dogs.
The clinic will be held at the Bayview Fire House on 6th Avenue
in Galloway from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. There are only 100 shots available
– so get there early!!
The Oscar project and the
Interact Club are collecting leashes and dog food to be distributed at the
May 15 clinic. All items can be brought to Room 607 or 413. ...click

SAMMIE'S STORY
About two weeks ago, an individual called his vet to say his baby sitter
"stepped on his dog's leg" and broke it. The dog's leg was broken two
years ago and pinned as well. When the owner called his vet to euthanize
it, the vet said"no way will we euthanize a viable animal".
The owner said if they didn't euthanize it, he would "Beat it to death".
The vet called us and we got the dog surrendered to NJAFA.
Sammie has a torn cruciate. It is costing over l,000 to fix his leg.
Sammie's owner kept him in a room all by himself because sammie "pooped
and peed" everywhere. Sammie came from a puppy mill and because the
owner never trained Sammie or spent time with him. Sammie had to suffer.
At night Sammie was crated.
The good news is that we have found a loving home for Sammie but neither
the owner or NJAFA can afford the surgery that will give this little boy
the chance he deserves.
Won't you help us?
UPDATE ON DOUG GEARY AND HIS DOGS. FEBRUARY 10,
2010
A MAN AND HIS DOGS
Last year, Doug Geary, 76, lived in a Ford Bronco on the streets
of Burlington County with his three dogs. This Thanksgiving, the
University of Pennsylvania alum and onetime suburban success
story woke up in a warm Medford apartment, then shared a feast
with 51 members of his extended adoptive family.
Geary, an Air Force veteran and paramedic who lost his home to
foreclosure but refused to go into a shelter because he would
have to abandon his dogs, moved animal lovers to tears. Readers
- including Gov. Rendell - lined up to help a man so committed
to his pets.
As promised, Geary allowed the Medford couple who rescued him
from his front seat to organize his finances. After finding him
an apartment, they set up rent payment from his Social Security
check so he can't mismanage his money and wind up in the cold
again.
Money remains tight and a bankruptcy filing looms on the
horizon, but Geary doesn't complain.
"He's doing well, considering," says Kelley Meyer of Medford.
"He knows what's expected of him. If he's strapped one month,
he'll go to the Goodwill pantry for food."
Sadly, Geary recently said goodbye to his beloved Frisky Buster,
an 18-year-old bichon. He tapped a "dog use only" fund for
cremation.
"Right now, I'm relaxing and sitting at my desk looking at [his
remains] in a little box," Geary relays. "Please tell everyone
that everything's just fine."
UPDATE: February 1, 2010 - Doug Geary has passed away. NJ Aid
for Animals is helping his loving companions left behind.
HELP FOR LITTLE DOGS WHOSE OWNER WOULD NEVER LEAVE THEM
Dover and Kinsey miss their owner Doug terribly. They were never
apart but now they will have to move forward without Doug.
Both require major medical expenses.
Dover, the little Lhasa, is about l5 years old and needs a
dental terribly. He is also suffering from severe arthritis and
will need pain meds for life. A tumor under his tail is also
going to require a biopsy
Kinsey, tested positive for Erlichia and Lyme. She also had the
worst gum disease and mouth infection the vet had ever seen.
Once this happy friendly little old lady (l2 years old) gets her
dental and her Lyme cleared up,she will be good to go to her
forever home again.
Two medical exams, 2 dentals, 2 blood workups, pain meds,
antibiotics, and a biopsy for these dogs has cost us a fortune.
Any money collected once the vet bill is paid off will go to
senior citizen taking the dogs for their care!!!!!

UPDATE: February 10, 2010
Doug Geary was laid to rest yesterday with the ashes of his
little dog in his casket. Our military took care of all the
expenses. If you would like to add a comment to his memorial,
please see attached link.
http://obit.lechnerfuneralhome.com/wrapper_gb.php?id=753193&clientid=lechnerfuneralhome&listing=Current
His beloved companions, Dover and Kinsey have both had their
teeth cleaned, complete blood work ups and are on medications
for arthritis and infection. Dover is also having a tumor
removed today. Paws crossed for a good report on biopsy.
The best news is that both babies will be going to a wonderful
senior citizen who has agreed to take the babies into her home
for the rest of their lives.
NJAFA volunteer and "go to" expert for rescue help, Sherry
Heiser, found this wonderful woman to take the babies and Sherry
went a step further and arranged transport to Maryland.
Barring any unforeseen circumstances, they will be transported
to their forever home on Friday. Kelly, Doug's angel who helped
him from the start is fostering the pups and reports they are
playing in the snow!!!
Unfortunately our bill at Evesham Vet Clinic in Voorhees is
topping $l,000 but we are hoping with generous contributions
we
will be able to pay this off right away.
We have some great people working behind the scenes to try to
get the last large donation to Doug of $2,000 that was
restricted to the dogs to be taken out of the estate but will be
difficult to do.
Thanks to all....Kelly, Brian, Sherry, Dr. Mic, US Military and
the wonderful people who called and emailed us about the dogs.
SALEM - Nearly a year after several animals
were rescued from a dog-fighting ring in Penns Grove home last November,
Khalil Spikes was officially sentenced for his role in the incident Friday.
Spikes will serve five years probation and pay restitution of more than
$9,000 as part of a plea deal reached in September.
Spikes, 29, now of Sheffield Drive in Willingboro, had previously pleaded
guilty to a third-degree count of allowing a place for dog-fighting in
September. He was sentenced Friday morning in state Superior Court in Salem.....click

NJ AID FOR ANIMALS HOLDS ITS 3rd FREE
VACCINE CLINIC FOR DOGS AND CATS IN CAMDEN CITY,NJ
Over l00 dogs and cats were given
free rabies and distemper shots on Saturday, September l2.
Free flea preventative was also given to all dogs
Thirty dogs were signed up by their owners to be spayed or
neutered and about a dozen cats. We also were able to give
emergency assistance (fluids) to a sick dog who was later
taken to Mt. Laurel.
Over l00 collars and leashes were given away and about
3,000 pounds of food.
NJ Aid for Animals wishes to thank the many volunteers
including the vet who donated their time and worked very
hard to make this event happen.
We are planning a very large event for the Spring to
prevent the PARVO virus from infecting the dogs of Camden
in the hot summer of 2010. Watch this site for details
EVA MARIE SAINT - This is Eva Marie. Another rescue
asked NJAFA to go and get Eva Marie from a very high kill shelter in
NJ. Once we picked up Eva and took her immediately to a vet to have
her face checked out, we learned, sadly, that she has jaw cancer.
Poor Eva was covered in mats and filthy. Her ears were infected with
yeast and she had fleas everywhere. Despite all that and her gum
being very swollen, she is a lover.
Eva will require lots of help medically and we do not have the
funds to help her. We could not bear to take her back to the high
kill shelter and since the original rescue doesn't want her either,
we have decided to take her into our sancutary.
She has already captured our heart and she will yours too. Come and
meet her at our September 26 event in Burlington or Steve and
Cookies in Margate on September 27.
She is about five years old and loves everyone including cats.
She had her CT Scan today at Red Bank Vet Hospital. VERY LARGE MASS
on her jaw. Today's vet visit was over $l,300.
Operating tomorrow to take what they can out. Tomorrow's surgery is
close to $3,000.
Any help would be appreciated for this gentle giant.
UPDATE ON EVA MARIE

9/10/09 - THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO DONATED.. WE RECEIVED OVER l50
COLLARS AND LEASHES!!!!!
NJ AID FOR
ANIMALS NEARING 500 CATS THAT HAVE BEEN SPAYED OR NEUTERED
FOR CAREGIVERS!!!
Thanks to our fabulous volunteers, our vet techs, Pennie
and Dani and our compassionate vets, Dr. Campbell and Dr.
"HR".
In March, 2008, NJ Aid for Animals sponsored a free
spay/neuter day for owners of cats in Camden City, NJ.
Then in April, 2008 NJAFA "rented" a space for their vets
who volunteer their time to spay and neuter more cats.
In May, 2008, one of NJAFA's long time donors who is still
helping us to save animals in Camden sponsored another
"spay day" at the same place for us.
In June, 2008, with money getting shorter, we got smarter
We searched the area and found another group that had a
mobile surgery van but no one to do surgery. So we
"partnered" up.
June, 2008, Atlantic Co. SPCA and NJ Aid for Animals
spayed and neutered 30 cats for caregivers that could not
afford it.
and have just completed our ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY with our
partner Atlantic County SPCA.
In addition to our other program services, once a month
since March, 2008 we have been spaying and neutering feral
cats in the mobile van with our wonderful team of vets and
volunteers.
We are close to nearing our 500 mark for the number of
feral cats we have speutered and helped.
The caregivers of feral cats who are trying very hard to
work within the guidelines of TNR are already putting out
their own time, energy, money and resources to help the
cats that have to live outside.
Our program helps those caregivers who would otherwise
have to pay (even at low cost "clinic" prices), hundreds
of dollars to spay or neuter their managed colonies.
Neither ACSPCA nor NJAFA receive a profit and our vets and
vet techs receive no compensation.
MISTY A LITTLE GIRL FROM
CAMDEN THAT NEEDS HELP.
One of our first friends in
Camden was a woman
named Jamie. Jamie knew nothing about animals but
knew she lovedthem. She saved several cats off the streets and NJAFA
spayed and neutered them. She was a friend to all animals.
On New Year's Eve of 2006, Jamie feel over dead in her apartment of
a heart attack. She was only 44. Her mother donated her body and
gave away her belongings and called us to say all of Jamie's cats
were going to the shelter if we didn't come and get them right then.
Our President rushed to Camden
and got Jamie's cat. All found a home except Misty because she
'swats" and doesn't like other cats. We could not take a chance with
adopting her and she is our longest "resident".
Misty needs a surgery that is very delicate. Most vets won't even
touch this kind of surgery but we have found someone we trust with
experience.
Misty has developed a trauma hernia which is very different from an
easily repaired umbilical hernia. She has to have a screen put in
her to separate her intestines that are bulging out. She lives in a
very large area completely by herself (of course with tv and tons of
toys so not sure what happened).
Check out Misty's photo - her malady has not caused her to miss any
meals!
Won't you help us raise money for her surgery?
UPDATE on MISTY - 9/9/09 -
MISTY HAD HER
TRAUMA HERNIA SURGERY TODAY
Thanks to our wonderful angels,Drs. Honey Rothberg and Helen
Campbell, Misty finally got her surgery today.
She is resting comfortably BUT NOT HAPPY!!! The hernia she had was
not the typical umbilical hernia but a trauma hernia which was very
delicate to operate on.A trauma hernia is seen many times in auto
accidents on humans and animals.
In fact, her KIDNEY was sitting in her hernia.
Everything was pushed back to its proper place and sewn up. A very
nice clean neat rip and Misty is on her way to a nice recovery.
Misty, poor little girl from Camden. What a life she has endured.
Thank you to all who have followed her and to the docs who helped
her!!!!
Even though Misty is still up for adoption, she has made herself
very comfortable in our basement and our guest bath (depending on
her mood). She will always have a home with us.
